D&D 5 Character Background - War Hardened



WAR HARDENED
Summary: Through your lifespan you have been scarred by years of war.  This could be a result of you living through a long war where you are directly effected, or fighting in a battle where you saw a lot of death.  Either way these years have taken a toll on you and changed you.

Skills: Persuasion, Survival
Tool Proficiencies: One type of artisan tools, vehicles (land)
Equipment: a set of common clothes, A set of artisan’s tools (one of your choice),
a shovel, a belt pouch containing 15 gold, a childhood diary

Feature: Conflict Resolution - Throughout your life you have been avoiding physical conflict however that is not always possible while growing up in a society riddled with war.  You have become proficent at conflict resolution and sometimes avoiding it altogether, because this is the best solution.
- When attempting to settle an argument you can roll an advantage to persuasion checks
- You roll advantage when trying to glean information from soldiers that are not hostile toward you.

Personality Traits (d6):

  1.  I feel as though I am in debt to my family as they supported me through the tough years. I constantly am trying to help others through tough times.
  2.  Although battle has scarred me physically, mentally no one is tougher. Choose a battle scar that may be the cause of one of your low ability scores (example: two of your twos or fingers were chopped off which is why my dexerity is only 10)
  3. Due to my father and mother being killed during the war I have been left an orphan. I raised my youngest brother until he was also eventual killed, I am the only one left
  4. After my older sister became the target of raiding soldiers, I swore to never let something like that happen to someone I love.
  5. As a boy when I was coming home one day from work, I was captured by enemy soldiers of a specific race (choose a specific race), and sold into slavery. I eventually escaped but I have never forgiven them or their race.
  6. I am physically fit due to the amount of fighting I have done throughout my life, however the constant turmoil has left me mentally scarred.  I am constantly looking for the reason why I was the one affected in this way, which when not finding answers only causes more mental anguish

Ideals (d6):

  1.  Aspiration. I aspire to be like the great soldiers of the war that saved my life on multiple occasions (Neutral)
  2. Revenge. I will crush those that wronged me and my family. Whatever it takes. Why stop there? (Evil)
  3. Enforce. I will help enforce the law that has been established through the results of this war because I know that with these another war can be prevented. (Lawful)
  4. Anarchy. Politics and law started the war there is no place for either in this world (Chaotic)
  5. Fair Work. Through hard work and dedication comes the greatest reward, whether that reward be freedom, knowledge, or the ability to help others. (Good)
  6. Nation. My fellow countrymen are all that matter to me (Any)

Bonds (d6):

  1.  I will do whatever it takes to protect those who have protected me
  2. I will never loose the petrified toe I took as a souvenir from the cold dead corpse of an enemy soldier who once tried to abduct me.
  3. I have many close friends who grew up in similar circumstances with.  We will always look out for each other.
  4. My fathers weapon (any simple weapon), has never steered me wrong, and it likes blood as much as I do.
  5. I mourn the memory of a loved one (girlfriend/boyfriend, mother/father, brother/sister) killed in the war, he/she will always be in my heart.
  6.  Throughout my life I have always done things alone and only relied on my instinct this is all I need

Flaws (d6):

  1. Whenever I hear loud noises, I must lash out at the closest thing whether that be living or not. This is a gut reaction to the horrors I faced
  2. I am known throughout my hometown as the deserter. They hate me for it.
  3. When faced with a tough decision I always state this is a tough decision, then wait for someone to make it for me.
  4. During the war I betrayed my people and many died as a result, now I must live with their ghost haunting my dreams
  5. Because I believe I am so good at conflict resolution, I seek out conflict and may even reate some to try to hone my skills
  6. No one know the troubles I have seen, nobody knows the pain. And you make sure everyone knows about it, no one can complain quite like you
